Day 8: Quy Nhon – Phnom Penh

Please contact your hotel reception to reconfirm the transfer time – you will be transferred to Quy Nhon airport (YOUR OWN ARRANGEMENT with Ananatara Quy Nhon) for your flight to Saigon, for your connecting flight to Phnom Penh.

Upon arrival in Phnom Penh, after going through immigration/custom formalities and collecting your baggage, you will be welcomed to Cambodia by your guide at the exit hall, where you will then be transferred to your hotel for check-in.

Day 9: Phnom Penh

Pick up at 08:30 AM – After breakfast at your hotel, start your Vietnam and Cambodia Getaway day tour to visit the Royal Palace, built by King Norodom in 1866, and the Silver Pagoda, located within the grounds of the Royal Palace. The Silver Pagoda is so named because of its floor, which is made up of 5,000 silver tiles. Continue to National Museum, one of Phnom Penh’s true architectural gems. The Museum is instantly recognizable with its warm red terracotta and its gracefully cured roof topped by dozens of guardian Nagas. It was designed in Khmer style in 1917 by famed French architect Georges Groslier & Ecole Des Arts Cambodgiens.

This afternoon we come face to face with the horrific crimes of the Khmer Rouge. Tuol Sleng was a former high school that the Khmer Rouge turned into a centre for interrogation, torture and death. Today it is a museum of torture and serves to remind visitors of the terrible atrocities that came to pass in Cambodia. 17,000 people passed through the gates of this prison and only seven lived to tell the tale. Tuol Sleng is a profoundly moving experience and not everyone will want to visit. However, it is key to understanding the hell into which Cambodia descended and how far it has come in the years since.

Finally, the very last and rather downbeat stop is the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek. An old Chinese cemetery, Choeung Ek was turned into an extermination camp for political prisoners. The remains of 8985 people were exhumed from mass graves and are kept in a memorial stupa here. Despite the horrors of the past, it is a peaceful place to go and a tranquil spot to reflect on the tragic events that engulfed Cambodia and its people.

Pick up at 10:30 AM – your guide and driver will meet and escort you to Phnom Penh International Airport for your flight to Ho Chi Minh City.
